Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my ecommerce conversion rate?
Divide your number of orders by your number of visitors, then multiply by 100. If 100 people visit and 2 buy, your conversion rate is 2%. Most store platforms and analytics tools, including Shopify, WooCommerce, and Google Analytics, can track it for you.
What is a good ecommerce conversion rate?
It varies a lot by industry, price point, and traffic source, so the best benchmark is your own past performance. Many stores convert in the low single digits, which is why even a fraction of a point can make a real difference.
What’s the difference between a point and a percent?
Going from 2% to 3% is a 1-point lift, but it’s 50% more orders. Going from 2% to 4% is just 2 points, but it doubles your orders. Small-sounding conversion gains are often big business gains.
How can I improve my conversion rate?
Common places to start are reducing checkout friction (such as allowing guest checkout), building trust (security seals, guarantees, a visible phone number), and avoiding surprise fees at checkout. Test changes one at a time and measure the results. I cover these in more depth in my Entrepreneur article on conversion lifts.
